Day 140, September 4: Mile 2424 to 2448

  • Start: Mile 2423.6

  • End: Deception Lakes - Mile 2447.5

  • Miles: 23.9

  • Ascent: 4498 | Descent: 4678

Washington gives new meaning to the phrase “uphill both ways.” The climbs are relentless, but I can feel my legs getting even stronger in response to the challenge, which feels good.

In the early hours of the morning, I was caught up to by some friends I had met on days 0-2, including Spice, Mouse and Stinger, who were also hiking with Pinch and Twinkle Toes. We chatted and caught up as we descended to a creek below.

The creek was calm and scenic, and I filtered water, ate some snacks, and continued on towards the big climb of the day. Halfway up the climb, I stopped to filter more water and eat a lunch. Another big group including Dory, Yardsale, Spills, Gummy Bear and some others whose names I didn’t catch, joined for lunch in the area. Kevin made his way there too, and we all laughed and chatted as we ate and drank.

The remainder of the climb, and the descent after, I felt like I was all business, pushing forwards strong and steady. I took a few breaks but mostly just powered up and down, although my feet did start to hurt at the bottom of the descent. There was a tricky stream crossing and Kevin and I took a short break before making our way across and up the final climb of the day.

The mosquitos towards the end of the day got bad. I had almost forgotten about the problem of mosquitoes as (thankfully) there haven’t been too many in Washington. I suited up with DEET, a bug head net and my rain jacket to hike the final mile as they were already buzzing in my ears and around my face.

Kevin and I made to camp by the scenic Deception Lakes. I ate dinner in my tent while we chatted. He and I will reach the town of Leavenworth tomorrow, and Gus and Frankie should be able to join us on the following day, as they had to slow down due to Gus’ bout with norovirus. I’m really hoping I’m in the clear from catching it at this point!
