Day 99, July 25: Unplanned Zero in Burney

  • Start: Burney - Mile 1411.3

  • End: Burney - Mile 1411.3

  • Miles: 0.0

  • Ascent: 0 | Descent: 0

I woke up at the church in Burney and realized that my foot was hurting way too much and I needed to take a zero, womp womp. Part of me was happy I had a chance to rest but mostly I was annoyed my body wouldn’t cooperate with what my mind wanted to do.

Resigned, I walked with Jedi to the post office and I shipped ahead some warm layers that I wouldn’t need for the heat wave week ahead, as well as a couple other items. It felt nice to simplify and lighten up my pack a bit. The post office was hilariously unhelpful though. I get a completely different story about the rules and details of shipping packages from one post office to the next - it’s pretty comical.

Jedi and I got food at the Blackberry Cafe next to the post office. I got a tasty club sandwich and downed two huge glasses of Coke. We walked back to the church and I spent the rest of the day icing my feet in a foot soaking tub, massaging out the kinks in my feet and legs, and napping. Jedi and I went to get dinner at the Mexican restaurant across the street and it was just okay. I had fajitas that were good but not sizzling, a margarita that didn’t taste like it had any tequila in it, and a fish taco that was inedible. Afterwards, we got some tall cans of beer and drank them in the grocery store like the hiker trash that we are, as the church did not allow alcohol on the property. Back at the church, there was nail polish in the hiker box so I painted both of our nails and chatted with hikers around before going to bed.
