Day 128, August 23: Mile 2191 to 2211

  • Start: Mile 2191.4

  • End: Mile 2211.2

  • Miles: 19.8

  • Ascent: 3430 | Descent: 2093

Today was a bit better of a day than yesterday. The elevation profile was much chiller than the previous two days, and in the morning we got trail magic from a couple named Cowboy and Mrs. Cowboy. They had a big EZ-up and camp chairs set up, and were serving blueberry pancakes, perfectly cooked eggs, donuts and fruit. And hot coffee, a rare treat on trail for me!

A kind of crazy moment happened while we were eating breakfast. I had gotten my pile of food and was chewing the pancake when I realized it had something crunchy in it. I immediately called out to Cathole, who has a severe nut allergy and was just about to put a bite of the pancakes into his mouth. He checked with Cowboy and it turns out they indeed did have walnuts in them. Cathole was carrying an epipen, but I saved him and us a whole lot of trouble because it still would’ve been very bad if he had eaten them. I’m a hero!

After peeling ourselves away from the trail magic, we hiked on for a while and then stopped for lunch at a beautiful lake. Then, more hiking and I was able to talk to my sister on the phone for a while. I made it to camp early for once and we all had dinner together.
